Exclamation Stage 1 question>>?

So i got my bike from a dealer (used) and the guy at the dealership said that it had the stage 1 upgrade done. my bike is injected ( the first bike that i have had that is injected) and i slapped a thinderheader on it. it runs great no backfiring upon acceleration.. But once i hit 50 mph the check engine light comes on . The bike doesnt loose any power or miss or anything.
Also my pipe has more discoloration than my last one. maybe too rich??

>>so my question is.
If this bike doesnt actually have the stage one download would it act like this?? i know that there are some major F-ing gurus on here and im looking for some help. Im used to doing everything myself but this CPU stuff throws me for a loop.. Thanks in advance!

Discoloration is from running to lean.

engine light may not be related. The only useful thing with the HD download is it will bring your rev lock up to 6250 from 5500. You need an efi yuner such as tts mastertune or pcV , or thundermax, that is when you will feel the true benefit of the stage 1!

Not a full true statement, the heating of the pipes even under a safe operating a/f will discolor pipes. That is why companies make pipes with heatshields now to keep the clean chrome coloring without blueing.

To the OP, you need to find out what the CEL is. But if a dealer told me it had stage 1 I would take that as the air cleaner and asked the question. So did it have stock pipes before the addition of the new pipes? If you added pipes onto the bike w/ a SE stage 1 cleaner then you need to have the ecu reflashed or buy a fuel tuning device to add some fuel in to ensure you don't run lean. But motors will run their best lean but too lean will cause detonation and can ruin a motor real quick. If you don't have the funds for a tuning device or reflash (HD) then I would put the stock pipes back on until you do.

You are not even close to a true statement. What ever you do dont blow your money on the flash on a 07 or later bike unless you just want to donate more to the MC. You need to stop with this crazy wrong advice. Go to nightrider.com and spend a 100 on Xieds and spend your other funds on real mods.

I second the idea of Xieds. I have them and no detonation whatsoever.
keeps a nice low end going up the hills in high gear.

Crazy wrong advice, say what? I never said to go flash on any bike, I left that as an option to the original poster. None of my advice was wrong in any aspect. If he has a stage 1 cleaner and pipes the bike will run lean and if long enough can destroy his motor. So I adviced him to pick up a fuel tuning device or flash it to correct the a/f to a safe operating level. Nice plug for a website though

update>>

So i went to the dealership and they said that the bike did have the stage 1 download .
as for the check engine light.. it was historical( not currently happening) it was a loose sparkplug wire.
The machanic said that even with a stage 1 the a/f mix is still lean.

it's times like these that i wish i still had a carberated bike..

I'm no rocket scientist but when someone puts a photo of their bike up with their post, more than likely it's their most current and it's labeled 2005 FXD. Then I would say it's a 2005 Dyna and they didn't have oxygen sensors to hook up the XIEDs to correct the ECU. On the earlier EFI motors you can get away with adding an open intake or an open exhaust and not have too much to worry about but you can't do both at the same time cause then you have really leaned out the mix. A dealer reflash will bring the mix to EPA standards. A fuel management system should be installed to bring in some fuel and that in turn will lower the cylinder temps a little, an added benefit.

Thats the crazy wrong advice. 07 and above have closed loop EFI so you can change the intake and exhaust without a hitch. Its advice like yours that keeps people believing that they are going to burn up their bikes.....
