Default Question about Paint

Hi,

New forum member. Been riding my Harley for about a year now.

I have a 200o FXDX, which I purchased from my father (he got a little too old to ride it, moved onto a different bike). Problem is its purple. I guess when you're a 3 time vietnam combat vet with 6 kids, you don't have much to prove. I'm just a two time combat vet with no kids, so needless to say, I'd like to move onto a different color.

I want to go with the denim black (flat, no gloss) look, to match the already blacked out bike. Ive been calling around, and most people are quoting me around 1100-1500 dollars just for the tank and 2 fenders.

I have read up a bit on rattle canning it, but truthfully, ive never rattle canned anything not even a wall.

What would you suggest?

Any specific shops I can send to the parts too that have good prices? Should I try to rattle can it? I was thinking possibly I could find a set already painted and just buy those (seems to be cheaper that way than to pay for a paint job)

Is there a better part of the forums for this question?

I got my FXDX tank and fenders painted black pearl for $495 plus shipping from www.colormaniapaint.com

I read mixed reviews of them on these forums but decided to give them a shot and the paint came out great.

They said that flat/denim would be the same price.

They are in San Diego area, so shipping would likely be much less for you than it was for me.

Thanks, I'll shoot them an email, and work up a cost sheet.

When you say "spray" I'm assuming you mean with a paint gun, as opposed to rattle canning it.

How hard is it to DIY (do it yourself) paint job a harley tank/fenders? Bare in mind, I'm no mechanic, my ability stops at oil changes. And ive never painted anything short of a fence in my life.

I called a local Powder Coater as well, and had a price quote of 500, to do the Tank and F/R Fenders in something called "black magic" which he says would look awesome. I'm going to go check out some color samples today. Plus only 5 day turn around for powder coating, and that price includes him stripping the parts. All I have to do is dissasemble and degrease.

What are your thoughts on powder coating vs DIY Paint Jobs?

Roger,

Is there a an advantage to using a paint gun over a rattle can (provided you can get the colors correct)

And is there a guide for this process?

All I know as of now is:

1) Dissasemble
2) Degrease
3) Wet Sand down to bare metal
4) Primer Paint one layer
5) Sand Primer to coarse
6) Primer Paint one layer
7) Sand Primer to coarse
8) 2 Coats of Base Color
9) Sand to coarse

Than apply the Gloss to protect

I'm pretty sure thats no all correct, and a guide would be suberb.

My experience with rattle can is the paint can easily be damaged by spilling gas on it, at least it was for me, the paint would just bubble then peel right off, what a mess.Just my experience and maybe not others.
