Does the bike have forward controls? If it has mid controls, why not just buy a set of the forward controls but just install the pegs/mounts. You can probably find those cheap.

I had one on my Street bob with mid controls. I sold it because it really wasnt very comfortable for me, the only place for feet positioning is on top of the bar which was too narrow... unless you put highway pegs on it which to me looks a bit awkward.... I opted for a set of highway pegs and stayed with my mids and couldnt be happier, anyway thats my 02 cents.
Go ahead and get her the engine guard ( I don't like the term crash bars...LOL). My wife has forward pegs on her 2004 WG. She rode my 2010 WG with the engine guard and liked it. I also just had a set of mid pegs installed for her as well today. It's all about what's gonna make her comfortable. We picked up an engine guard (HD model) for $100.00 shipped. Don't remember if she got it off eBay or Craigslist, but it's in excellent condition. Her problem was getting around the air cleaner (it put her foot at an odd angle and caused it to cramp up periodically), so initially we got some peg extenders to move her leg out away from it. Now she has three choices to choose from while she's riding and she can move her feet around as she sees fit to be comfortable. I'm 5'11" and I love mine as well. I honestly don't know how I got by without it for almost a year.
