Switchback before and after
As a guy that has toured quite a bit on Dynas I can't imagine why I would want to change. My Dyna with Progressive Suspension, Superbrace fork brace, and Sputhe Engineering motor kit stabilizer slices through corners and is a blast in the mountains or twisities like the Ozarks. Plus I can carry plenty of gear. I'd pick the Switchback in a second if I were looking to buy right now. Sporty riding to me is just more fun that plodding along, even, and especially, on long trips.
I agree that a softail is a pure look, better than a swingarm frame esthetically as it resembles the rigid frame of old. I personally prefer a swing arm frame for the ride. I have buds who run them (softtails) and love them. I looked at a softail heritage classic too. Also considered a used FatBoy that a friend was selling. Actually, I went in to buy a wideglide and was going to add a removable windshield and removable soft bags and that was what I was thinking of adding to the WG...then I saw the fld. It was already loaded, same engine but with fat front tire, front-end, floorboards, quick-release hard bags and windshield, more weight than WG that I wanted but sacrificed the front end rake, which I liked on the WG.
I don't think the switchback should be thought of as a touring bike that changes to a cruiser...it isn't. It's a cruiser that can tour, nothing more. I would not be as comfortable at the end of the day as a dedicated tourer. If someone thinks touring is what they do most, buy a touring bike. This a cruiser that can also allow you to take some stuff with you and it comes with some other added bennies too.
If I could afford it, I would own a street or road glide for the long hauls and a wide glide for cruising...I tried to carve the middle of both with the fld. I think by the time I get done with the FLD, I could have bought a street glide! I've come to appreciate that batwing and if they offer it up at some point for the fld, I will be a buyer. But then I'm now just turning it into a street glide, aren't I? It is what it is but also it isn't what it isn't. Good news is, it's mine.
Once more of them get on the road, it will earn it's respect, I think. It will be viewed as the little brother (as opposed to little sister) of the RK because it has some heart. Just like the little brother who hangs with older brother, but kicks older bro's friends, azzes..so allowed to hang around. We all know that type.
If it's a queen, that biatch has ballz big enough to bowl with! It will become known once they get out there more.
Take care
