A program in the ECM can not cause a failure of the ECM, it could cause a mechanical problem like running too lean and burning a piston or valve. A faulty ECM is usually due to a failed driver, a solder joint or a short circuit that damages the board, etc. It is somewhat important to know what caused the damage to the ECM, especially if it was a faulty component that took it out.

How do you find out when bike was built, just bought my 07 used 2 weeks ago, has 30k miles on it. Not sure if any of these issues have been delt with. Can dealer run vin to see what if anything reguarding the service updates have been done?
