Default FXDB taillight question

I just bought a 2011 street bob. I dislike the chopped fender especially, the "sparto" style taillight. Since there aren't many options to replace, I know many of you have opted to paint it black. Having just removed the assembly, I noticed it looks to be completely sealed. I'm looking to get it powdered so would need to break it down. Anyone know the technique or should I just mask off and rattle can?

It's sealed you need to mask it off.

I plan on doing this also. I know you can purchase the housing seperately from HD. I looked into it because I want to modify the tail light and do away with the plate bracket. I haven't taken it apart but if you can buy the housing, you could get that powdered then reassemble. But it may be more trouble than its worth.

Maybe not for you but this is what I did because I didn't like the chopped fender or that tail light. I was getting a custom paint job anyway so I added this into the mix. I went with a 2006-2008 rear dyna fender (got it in great condition off of Ebay for $100 shipped) and I am having the shop smooth the fender. The 2006-2008 model fender is longer and the exact same fender minus the tail setup. The 09+ all they did was chop off a bunch from the fender and add the new tail light. I am eliminating the tail light completly and will use the turn signals as the brake light/turn signals/running lights since they come from the factory already made to do this. Plus the addition of the custom paint/airbrush work that will go on the tins. I don't have it back from the shop yet, but here is a pic to give you the idea. I found it on a google search to give me an idea.

Buying another housing is definitely not an option. It looks to be an led unit and is probably quite spendy. I was lookin into a new fender, but can't find one in denim for a decent price. Rattle can it is!

I do however, have a newer style wide glide fender and might try to make that work.

I went the other way on my 06, bought a chopped fender kit and used a laydown license plate mount where the 09 and 10 tail lights are. Used the turn signals as run, turn, brake lights. Turned out very well.

Selling the 06 set up with tail light for $225 plus shipping is anyone is interested. Vivid black and in pretty good shape.
