Default primary cover question

I have a low rider with a kinda scratched up primary cover. I was going to replace the part but since I have forward controls, I thought I would order the wide glide cover without the opening for the shifter shaft. It looks like there is a part called a "sleeve" that screws into the cover and (I guess) seals the corresponding shifter shaft opening in the inner primary cover. In Ronnies parts finder, it looks like they call that part a screw or "mass, primary cover", it's a $2.49 part. Can anybody tell me if I can make this change and if I've got it right?

You can install the WG outer primary cover if you go to forwards. You will have to figure out how you want to go about getting the shifter shaft out of the inner primary. You have a couple of options. You could either cut the arm off of the shaft on the backside of the inner primary with a saw and then pull the shaft out from the outside of the inner primary cover or you can remove the inner primary cover and pull the shaft out as one piece from the backside. To plug the hole on the inner primary cover you can use a bolt and a couple of flat washers and a lock nut with a little silicon around the washers to prevent oil from leaking out of the primary or you could purchase the kit that you are referring to.

I did not know this. Getting ready to do the same thing on mine. What part number is it?

That part you are referring to"mass, primary cover" if it is part 22 on the parts finder of the primary covers it is not what you will use to plug the hole. When you remove the outer cover you will see a large bolt that is just threaded into the inside of the outer primary cover. That is what they are referring to as "mass, primary cover". What purpose it serves I have no idea. It just sticks out there like a sore thumb.

Thanks everyone for the help. I have forward controls and the "mid" shifter shaft has already been removed from its tunnel. Is there is a specific part I can buy (a "sleeve") that will attach to a wide glide outer primary and somehow engage and seal the shifter shaft opening in the inner primary? That screw (part # 20 in ronnie's parts diagram) apparently is not it. Does the wide glide inner primary cover have the same opening for a shaft that my low rider has? The inner primary part #'s are different. I could rig up a plug but would prefer to do it like a wide glide from the factory if I can.

wide glide outer primary cover, chrome #60782-06
low rider outer primary cover, chrome #60764-06

wide glide inner primary cover, black #BLK60791-06
low rider inner primary cover, black #BLK60790-06A

The forward control conversion kit #49080-06A (chrome) and 49021-09 (Black) includes plugs for the holes. I don't know if they can be purchased individually. The inner primary covers for the Dyna Wide Glide '06-up, Dyna Fat Bob '08-up w/forward controls and Softail models '07-up are all inner changeable except '08-up FXCW, FXCWC and '09-up FXSTSSE3. Same inner change for the outer primary cover.
