Question about the HD Tire and Wheel Coverage, don't grill me too hard...I know my tire needs replacing, but how can I measure the actual tread. I have 1 thread showing in one spot, so clearly it's time.
I'm not the type to take advantage of people, but HD says $400 for the tire, mounting and balance. I paid $1000 for the warranty- I figure they're still making money off me so I don't feel to bad..
I'm thinking about the ol' "I ran over a screw" idea because I've got the tire coverage, but HD says only replaced if tread is 3/32 or better. I'm thinking it's probably too late. Does Harley measure the most worn point of the tire? Does anyone have a picture of what a 3/32 tread depth looks like? Below shows tire, the better side and the side with the thread.

You can go to the auto parts store and buy a tread depth gauge for just a couple of bucks. It doesn't help with the warranty stuff but it'll tell you if you have 3/32's or not.
My own tires are at that depth and they look a little better than yours. Pictures are deceptive though. No way I'm paying 400 bucks. The actually tire is less than 200.
Buy the tire online for a little over 100, take the rim off yourself and take it to any shop. Metric or standard.
If you don't have a jack, buy a jack now. You can get a jack for around 250, tire for a bit over 100, mount and balance for 50. Lets do the math... Now add the savings for the next time you need a tire... Or how much easier other jobs will be with your new jack.
Stick a penny in the groove, if part if his head is covered there is more than 2/32" but if memory serves me correctly just check the tread depth indicators on the tire - those are the raised sections in the grooves, they should be flush at 3/32" but honestly, I don't get it - tires are a wear item, not a warranty item and you have worn yours out so get a new one. If you don't want to spend $400 then get a tire online, pull the wheel and take it to a shop or do it yourself with some tire irons if you are really cheap, you don't even need to balance it if you use Dyna beads which work very very well, I will never put weights on again. No, jack? You can make for for the price of a 2x6 that while not pretty, will get the job done. Not to mention that in the current condition I'll be it's quite squared off, it probably handles like crap too, change the thing before you hurt yourself.
they dont warranty wear items like tires and breaks. Now if your tire became defective due to a manufacturing defect they might cover it if they determine its not from being under or over inflated
From the picture your down to the wear bar so it won't pass inspection. If you have the tire replacement warranty just ask the dealer. I have a friend with the tire replacment warranty and he doesn't have any trouble getting them replaced. I think he just pays the 1 hr labor
I replaced both tires for less than those $400 including a $60 cost for mounting/balancing at local indy. Do some online shopping. I bought from Jake Wilson w/free shipping, but check 'em all.
