Default Measuring rim width

This sounds like a stupid question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. How do I properly measure the width of my rims? If, for example, I take a set of calipers and measure the width of the outer edges of the rim where it meets the tire, will a 4.5" rim measure (approximately) 4.5" inches? Or will it measure closer to 5.5"?

The reason I ask is, I'm running laced rims on my Low Rider, which were switched in place of the mags at the dealer just before I bought the bike. The rear laced wheel's outer edges are definitely more than 4.5" apart.

You have to measure the inside of the rim where the rim meets the tire bead. The size should be stamped on the rim to confirm the size
