Default started my FL/Dyna conversion

So been following the FL/Dyna for some time, guess ever sine I decided I would like to have fairing/stereo but not enough cash to step up to a larger bike. So started with my 02 low rider and said what the heck. Early this year I started to procure parts, purchased a front end off Ebay but quickly discovered that it wouldn’t do what I wanted, IE softail standard no provision for tins. So hit the local craigslist found a guy building a rigid and he liked the fact that the standard had built in rake, he had the FB front end, so we made a trade, he threw in the 21” spoked rim/tire for an extra 50. Bought tins headlight, light bar, turn signals and spots on ebay, waited and watched and scored all of them for a grand total of 125.00 soon realized my drag bars were not the answer so I offered them up for trade on craigslist, guy called with 12” apes on his sporty that he hated went over swapped bars out for him, got 1.25 wild one 12” apes already wired interally, even swap
As it sits at this point, bike is stripped down in front, here are a few pictures of the work in progress, did a trial fit yesterday had to grind a bit more on the stops and the frame stock but she is good to go up there now.
Left to do, need to wire up the headlight/turnsignals/spots. Still need to extend the wire harness inside the apes to fit to my harness, awaiting new risers and grips to complete the handlebar set up and then to measure the brake line. I need spacers for front fender, and I need to research the front brake rotor as my lowrider rotor bolted right to the rim and this 21” has not threads in the hub. (anyone help me with that?) I have the front of the fairing done and am working on the inside, ordered one of those off ebay and the unit as a whole is pretty good, outside was very minimal work, but inside was bit rougher, plus the radio opening was too large so I glassed it back up and am working on finishing the inside to my liking, I will also be moving my idiot lights to the fairing when done, and since the tank is off new led lights while I am in there here is a few pics of progress, I painted the outer fairing a satin black left my bike the impact blue, the satin black matches my seat and saddlebags so it all flows together pretty well

The wheel is more than likly a pre 2000 thats why there are no holes in it, you are better off getting a 16" wheel also did you say you swapped wiring with a sportster because the connectors may be differant I would use your stock wiring.

As far as the wheel is concerned the holes are there, not tapped, which has me stumped. (which is very easy to do these days) The wiring from sportser to dyna is good, its just the switch housings same plug and configuration that came off my dyna, I swapped my wired housings for his, we did his bike up first and signals.start/kill and horn bright lights all worked well

I agree, that conversion needs 16" fat rubber on both ends to look right - there's been a couple of them done and they look great - totally retro 60's look.

I'm sure you have, but check out all the posts in the FL/Dyna group: https://www.hdforums.com/forum/group...est-group.html

Most of my answers I found there, and good luck with the changeover.

yeah i've followed that as closely as I can, my only beef with that is that it is an on going discussion, you have trouble jumping in in the middle, tough to follow, but all of my answers short of my stupid not knowing stuff have come from there, IE how much to take off the frame how much to take off the lower tree so on and so forth

As for your wheel,it is pre 2000, better off getting a 16 from a 2000 up, this way it will have sealed bearing as the wheel you have now does not. Also will you be install an FL style rear fender to finish off the look.

Mine is almost complete a 2002 FXD, i have most parts from a fatboy front just missing the top tree then will swap out my softail front and install the fatboy front.

Good luck on your FL project

I agree that the FL-Dyna Interest Group may have so many posts by now that it could take a day to read all of them but you could just jump right in there with questions. Everyone there loves to help out.

I agree with the calls for the 16 inch wheel in the front. It is not required of course but the starting point for all the rest of us was getting a 16 inch wheel on the front. Everything else followed from there.

Here is my father's pre-06 dyna with full fenders and 16 inch wheels. He does have an old police batwing fairing for it also (in paint right now).

I intially was going 16" but after seeing a street glide with 21" i leaned that way, the 21x3.5 is really high on the list but this 21x2.15 came cheap, oh well back to the drawing board, to decide what i want up front

This is just my opinion but, every time I see an Electra-Glide of any kind with a front wheel taller than 16 inches, I throw up a little in my mouth.

16 inch FLH wheels are a dime a dozen on eBay and you would have no fender fitment issues.

Keep posting, we want to see the progress................
