Just thought I'd check in to the forum. Just got an '05 FXD for Father's Day after 10 years w/o a bike. Looking for suggestions on upgrades. Thought I'd start out with a set of Cycle Shack slip ons. Curious as to what people paid for their 1000 mile check up so there's no surprises.

Welcome, and if you bought a manual for far less than the 1000 mile check up. you would enjoy working on the bike and save money to boot I hate to say it but the dealers charge MUCH too much for what they do (if they do it) Always check your fluids if you have a dealer service, they have been known to short people.

The upgrades besides the slipons that most do is a rejet of the carb found here https://www.hdforums.com/m_65123/tm.htm and a stage 1 air cleaner setup with the K&N filter that you can install real easy, not the blue banded filter. Ask questions and learn to work on your ride yourself, we can help you here with any problems that pop up. It's really not hard!

Here's some info on the K&N filter https://www.hdforums.com/m_67662/tm.htm

I have the same bike as you do, the things I have done to mine so far are for comfort. I have added a detachable memphis shades windshield and lowers, HD saddlebags, HD quickdetach backrest, Sundowner seat, ISO grips, dually pegs, and highway pegs with heelrests. I think the dealer bills you for like 4 hours on the first service.

Here are a couple of pictures, one without the windshield and backrest and one with.

Thanks guys. I have the detachable windscreen and detachable back rest so far.

As for doing my own wrenching, that's not too hard, I did all the mods to my truck myself. The guy at the stealer-ship seemed to be pretty adament about having them do the servicing. He went so far as to state that the warranty might be affected if I didn't. Of course I'd have to take that with a grain if salt. Four hours of labor isn't cheap these days. I don't know what their going rate is but I saw that at my local Honda (car) stealer-ship it was $75 an hour.[sm=yikesomg.gif]

I would start off with the stage 1, that should make your bike run better and then I would go from there.

Take a look in the DIY forums for info on this, https://www.hdforums.com/forumid_242/tt.htm he's all wet, the only affect it can have on the warrantee is if a part fails that you have altered yourself. As far as the rest, I feel it's their way of getting you in so they can make the money on it

I would do the Stage 1 and, if you like the looks, put on a Vance & Hines Pro Pipe HS. This really let the bike breath and there was a noticeable increase in power. You will also need the download from the dealer or you could go the Power Commander route. I would rather go with a full exhaust change than put on slip ons, but thats just me!
