I restored a Yamaha back when I was in the military. Easiest color is black or white. I painted mine black lacquer since it is very forgiving. Base color is easy to spray...a lot of sanding...then the clearcoat, which is also easy to spray since you don't have to achieve a gloss spray...lots of sanding and then a buff and you'll get a deep glow.
I'm sure your talking about more of a custom job or something more shiney but here's a couple I didnt with graphics, nothing fancy and not a HD but .......
I painted my own bike, this is the second bike I have painted. The secret is having the proper polishing equipment. I want to try gold leaf next and flake mixed in the clear.
Yeah Dave.....
I painted my old Sportster here at home when I did the 5 year restoration. (Pictured as my signature photo here)
I used PPG catalyzed Urethane paint, and the related products that go with it such as epoxy primer, catalysts etc.
If you are going to paint your machine yourself (and I hope you do) this type of paint, and I do not mean this brand of paint, is the only way to go.
Surface prep is everything. Do that correctly and all else will go fine.
You remove the old paint, chemical clean the metal, etch with mild acid solution, prime and paint. Finish paint with 2 coats of clearcoat. The clear gives it the deep shine. No rubbing out is done, as you would have to do with lacquer.
This paint is bullet proof and fuel proof. Lacquer can be removed by simply spilling gasoline on it doing a fill up. Lacquer died out in 1959, so stay away from that stuff. Good luck.........pg
Yeah- it looks awesome! I am indeed planning to do my own paint. I've not yet decided on a paint scheme though; I'm really looking forward to it. You're right. prepwork is KEY. Painting over crap give you painted crap. I have a second set of tins for my bike that I'm going to shoot the new paint on, so I can keep doing it until it's 100% what-I-want without any downtime on the bike.
