Default Dumped...dangit

Howdy fellas. Went for a ride with my buddy yesterday, and got run off the road, around a corner. I hit the grass and vacated the bike...I'm fine, the bike has some bruising. Its a 2012 Street-Bob, but anyway, Left side of the tank, my brand new kryukan extended forwards, handlebars and rear fender. I called insurance yesterday, but here is my main question. When they go to replace the fender, is there a price difference between the stock fender with a sparto tailight hole, or not? I pulled the third brake light off and just had my plate covering the hole. Thanks for the insight.

Your best bet is to let the dealer quote a price for repairs and see if the insurance will cut the check to you. Make these simple repairs yourself (as long as there is no frame damage, bent forks, etc) and do the bike up the way you want it. Pocket that extra cash or use it for more mods

That is an at-fault accident so I would get all of the stuff off E-Bay and fix it yourself......you may save your insurance rates from going up.

Also, be sure to hit the damn animal instead of the guardrail or another vehicle (if possible) then it is a Comp claim and NOT and at-fault accident (I'm an ex-agent).

When you say "Run off the road" does that mean another vehicle was involved, or that you failed to negotiate a turn? The reason I ask is, a lot of insurance companies will waive your deductible if you sustain damage avoiding a collision (usually higher cost to them in repairs and medical bills in a collision accident) That would also make it not an at fault accident on your record. Depends what you told them already, even if a car runs you off and keeps going you should get the benefit of the doubt (read between the lines here)

I have to ask, was it your friend that "ran you off the road" because you were riding too close to each other. I personally trust no one within 100 feet of me and will maintain that space myself.

That's pretty bad advice.

A) It's untrue. Getting "run off the road" is at-fault because there was no contact. You may have avoided one accident, but caused another by losing control. There's no such thing as "run off the road", you failed to safely avoid the other accident. You didn't stop, swerve or speed up- you lost control. Don't try to say you didn't lose control because you did. If you were in control, then you're saying you purposely crashed your bike, which again, is at-fault.

B) this guy is on a public forum telling you to commit insurance fraud, which is a felony...crap like this is the reason insurance premiums are so high in the first place. All of these single car or "phantom vehicle" accidents happen all the time, when really, it's one person's bad mistake.

Sorry to go hard on you, and glad to hear you're OK, but these "had to lay her down" threads are all the same. You never HAVE to lay the bike down unless you hit something or something hits you. Bailing off your bike is not the best option, slow/stop, keep it upright, swerve or accelerate. Most people just freak and steer off the road.

Had a friend avoid hitting a dog and ran off the road. Like posted above, the insurance company doesn't care you were avoiding an accident when you crashed. Point is, you lost control of you vehicle. It isn't personal. It is just how the company sees it. Good to hear you weren't hurt. Buy the parts off ebay, Craigslist, or indy and do it yourself.

I got paid out for a sporty that I laid down a couple years ago. It was minimal damage. Front fender caught a large rock which stopped my momentum. A small scrape the size of a quarter on the tank, bent the bars, small scrape on air cleaner cover, and some low side scrapes on pipes. I picked it up and rode to the hospital (whole other story). All I ended up replacing was the bars. A $60 fix from craigslist. After deductibles, the insurance sent me a check for $3,800.00 that basically paid for my higher premium. If you don't need to make a claim, you might be better off without. I claimed mostly cause the medical coverage paid for five stitches worth $1,000.00 each.

Insurance companies blaming you for going off the road is BS. I had a car turn left in front of me, in my car. I went in the ditch to avoid it.

My insurance told me, the other driver would have been 100% at fault if I t-boned him, but I was 50% at fault for going in the ditch. Did they want me to kill the guy so I avoid liability? Insurance companies and lawyers are disgusting.

And people who say you should always be able to avoid hitting a deer, should stay out of Wisconsin, and live in their own little fantasy world. I have managed to avoid hitting one, but know that is part skill and part luck.
