My husband just bought a new to him dyna wide glide, he put less then 200 miles on it when he was forced off the edge of the driveway entering a gas station. He split the oil pan no other damage was done to the bike. My concern is he has driven other bikes and never had an oil pan split is this going to be a common problem if you hit potholes. Hecwas not driving fast. I think he should return the bike and buybsomething different. His old bike has hit this area before and no problems and it was also a dyna.
Im thinking maybe a dirt bike would be a good choice j/k Most cruisers have 5" or less of ground clearance and less than 3 inches of rear suspension travel.... cruisers and potholes are not a good mix. Maybe you should send him to a motorcycle safety foundation course?
He teaches safety course, I am asking if others have had this problem. He has been riding for over 30 years . He was forced off the driveway. So if you cannot give me legit advice please keep your rude commits to yourself.
He had to have hit that pan just right. There is a guard there that is supposed to hit first. I wouldn't worry too much about it happening again...He just got real unlucky...
I wasnt being rude, even you suggested him getting a different bike... You gave no indication of his experience, just your concern. I dont think he would be happy riding anything else. BTW: j/k = just joking ;o)
This is not common and do not worry that it will ever happen again. I have a friend that it happened to hitting a rock but it was a fluke. I have been riding for 45 years and this is only the second time I have heard of it. The odds of it happening again are astronomical.
Thanks for the reassurance that it wont happen again. I know it wasnt lowered, I know the original owner personally. It does seem lower then our other dyna. I thought it was the seat but now I think the frame itself is different. It is at the dealership and waiting to hear if the road coverege insurance will cover this or not.
when i bought my 01 EG it was already wrecked, looks like someone jumped a curb. the frame rail was bent, and the pan was broke . if something hard hits the oilpan directly, it can break pretty easy. but it is tucked up in there pretty good and safe as long as you stay on the road.
