I bought my dyna at the beginning of the year its an 09 which sat dormant for a few years.... I have been riding it for 10 months now using a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. checked the primary for extra oil NOPE. checked the air filter for oil NOPE. did a compress and leakdown test NOTHING WRONG there. People riding behind me can smell burning oil.... Im down to 2 possible things it could be 1 valve guides or valve guide seals, maybe oil control ring? Anyone have any other ideas? any way to test for those issues before I shotgun and replace everything! If i remove the rocker boxes is there anyway to know if its the valve guide seals. 1000 miles for a quart is stupid for a bike with 7k on it without a rebuild....
there has to be evidence of burnt oil deposits on the spark plugs, and on top of the pistons. if you had a small bore lite you could see what cylinder was causing it, or if it was both. a intake valve seal torn or that came apart would make it use oil, or the oil control rings stuck in their groves would be more likely . but sorry to say its going to have to come apart.
if your are over filling it, it would come out the breathers and into your carb to be burnt, this happened to me from the dealer, smelled like burning oil and level would drop so slightly. If checking cold do not fill past the half mark between cold and hot, and if checking hot leave it just a tad below the hot mark
If the valve guides are worn you would still get a good reading on the compression test
If valve seals are bad, wouldn't it show up on compression test. Sounds to me like it could be from breathers.
A bad valve oil seal would not show on a compression or leakdown test. If the valve itself was leaking at the valve face it would show on a compression or leakdown test.

yeah, after posting I thought about it and realized how wrong I was.
