Knock on wood: until now (57.000+ miles) I didn't have to use it on my own bike......
This is cool.
Ive learned which ones not to leave at home lol
Run through your toolbox and pull what you know you will need.
I guess I don't understand why you asked the question.
If they don't know how to work on their bikes at home, why do they think they will magically have the knowledge on the side of a busy highway at night?
If you do all your own work on your bike, you know what you need to take.
If you don't , then take a cell phone and insurance card. Nothing wrong with that, it makes packing that much easier.
Here is what is listed on the Iron Butt site. The most thorough list I've ever seen:
http://www.ironbutt.com/tech/aow.cfm?AOWID=28
Add to it, a set of torx bits.
Or, just carry what you are comfortable using on the side of the road or outside your tent/motel room.
If you are most comfortable with a cell phone, packing just got easier.
Always carry a flashlight.
Somewhere between the list above and a flashlight are the right amount of tools for you.

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
I am not mechanically incompetent and actually can figure out how to do repairs, especially with advice from others. So just because I prefer to have maintenance or repairs done by an experienced mechanic, doesn't mean I can't repair broken things myself. If a seat bolt falls out, or a Jiffy Spring breaks I can repair them myself. Yes, I probably can't make major repairs, like he men like Jonesee.
