Default CLUTCH PROBLEMS!!

i replaced my stock clutch cable by taking off the trans. cover (where the clutch cable goes in) and adjusted the inline adjustment and now when my bike is shut off and in gear i pull in the clutch in and the bike wont move without resistance. so i adjusted the inline adjustment again, no luck. so i was told to do a total clutch adjustment by taking the derby cover off and doing all the steps for that. once again no luck. when the bike is running it works fine. i can have it in gear and it dosnt wanna creep forward, and i can have it in gear running and pull in the clutch and it pushesaround fine. it worked fine before the new clutch cable. any ideas?

I would first, loosen the new cable, then do the clutch adjustment at the derby cover.

then do the cable adjustment as per the service manual. It should work fine after that.

My bike does the same thing, when the bike isnt running the clutch is dry and doesn't operate properly. When started the clutch is bathed in oil and operates as is should. I think most wet clutch H.D. motorcycles have this issue. I don't think its a big deal but its worth a call to the service desk.

Put it in neutral and push it anywhere you want to. I also work the clutch several times after I start mine to keep it from clunking so hard when it is cold.

My bike has been like that since the day I brought her home. I don't mind. I just rock it forward and slip it in to neutral. You'll find that you can move it easier with the clutch pulled and in gear after it has been ridden a bit. I don't think it's indicative of a problem.

I adjusted my clutch as per manual yesterday. I had never tried to roll it around in gear with the engine off and the clutch in. Yesterday, for some reason I don't remember, I tried to roll it like that and there was resistance. I was a little worried until I put it in neutral and it rolled just fine with no resistance. I thought that if it tried to roll with the clutch in after I started it and put it in first gear I might have to revisit the clutch adjustment. It was fine. It also operated just fine on the drive test. Ibelieve the new adjustment is correct and the plates may be slightly engaged and not completely lubricated before starting and driving and going through the gears. I, too, don't think this is indicative of a problem.

The manual has you backing off the adjustment nut too much in my opinion, if you just back it off where the plate is not making contact, maybe 1/4 turn, it gives you more pull and disengages better.

HD clutches achieve the necessary swept area by utilizing multiple plates. There is no doubt that a cold engine will result in some drag between the plates with the clutch disengaged. Also keep in mind that pushing a bike (clutch disengaged - cold engine) reverses the mechanical advantage provided by the transmission (big gear driving a small gear).
