Hey guys, so i have a 2000 FXDL. It was bored out to 96 ci, and had .10" over pistons. Well took it apart to do a leaking base o-ring and saw that she got hot! Have horrible scratching up both cylinders. So here is my question, in the quest to save money what can i do:
1. I can keep mine and get them honed to 20 over then have to buy 20 over pistons, but I have no clue how much honing costs.
2. Buy 88" cylinders, get them bored and honed and get close to stock or 10 over pistons.
I am also wondering can I use 96" cylinders. I do not quite understand how the stroke difference comes into play. All help is appricated fellas. I do not work during the winter so any way I can save money is a HUGE help to my family. thanks guys.

You didn't provide the current bore dimension and without knowing that, can't answer on #1. If truly bored to 96", plus .010" over, you can't bore larger. The MoCo does not offer .020" OS pistons anyway. If you have enough room, you can bore to 3.932" and go to the aftermarket for pistions. However, if the aftemarket piston/pin/rings weigh much less than stock; some vibration could result from an imbalance at the crank. The reciprocating weight should stay within 10% of stock.
88" and 96" cylinders are identical; you can use either one but not the pistons.
Boring/honing cylinders and fitting pistons runs about $120 in my neck of the woods. Check with the machine shop to make sure they have torque plates and have bored/fitted piston for Harleys before. If you check with a local dealer, you might get lucky and snag a set real cheap or even free; they have them laying around just taking up space.
Hope for your sake you're going to a recommended indy shop and not a dealership.
I'm doing the work myself. I just found a set of 88 cylinders a pistons for $100, may just throw them in for the cheap quick fix and get it bored and honed next winter.
Dude! Just buy new 95 inch cylinders from harley. Till you buy the used cylinders and have them bored and hones you will be putting out more money. There are plenty of vendors here that sell cylinders with pistons.

Now go find a set of SE204 cams, upgrade inner cam bearings, replace tensioner shoes with CYCO shoes and install heads with .030" MLS head gasket; about another $200. Nice cheap performance bump that will make the wait for bigger things more fun.
I have HQ 0039 cams, just replaced the tensioners and bearings last month. Also have Crane Adjustable pushrods and ported and polished heads. I think I am just going to throw these 88's on for now: still need to get it painted, wheels powder coated and lower forks powder coated, and how did i forget, mount my 87 FXRT fairing all before spring. Too much to do, with not enough dough..
I appricate the help fellas as always, the insight people give here is worth a million bucks.

Harley doesnt sell 95 they sell 96. and its not the bore that makes them 96 it is the stroke. That was my first thought until I found that out.
I would contact Fuel Moto. They have a 95" kit that is awesome. You need to turn your old cylinders in for a core. Best bang for your buck & they already have them ready to go.
