Default how to keep "Z" bars from moving

just finished installing a set of black 14 inch Z bar's on my 01 WG and it was quite a job. internally wired and done right. but now i cant keep them from twisting in the riser clamp. it is the factory 1 inch rise with the single plate on top. i managed to pull some threads on one of the holes so tomorrow ill be drilling/tapping that hole. can i lay some .020 shim stock in the mount area to try and get a little more squeeze or do i simply mount them at the correct angle , remove the two bolts for the riser mount and tac weld the bars to the riser on the underside?> any ideas/opinions would be appreciated.

the real way your suppose to do it, is drill and install a pin

you can try putting sandpaper between the riser, you can also do the beer can trick cut a strip of a beer can and wrap it around.

Default drill and pin

at first that sounded great, a roll pin would absolutely solve the problem. i guess i could pull the wires to the left and right where they exit the bottom of the bars and drill dead center. jeeze , would i have to do it right and drill from the backside on the upper clamp and try to conceal the pin as opposed to going all the way through from the top????. ill try the beer can shim first!. thanks for the ideas!.

He meant emery cloth and not regular sand paper.

i would use emory maybe 100 grit?. it still has a smooth side, which side would face the bars?. ill try shimming with brass shim/plate first. i have some .020 at home. ill still have to drill/tap the threads i pulled on the one hole. might try a longer bolt and try to get the threads farther down to see if i can get enough torque on it. i still like pin idea, that is a sure fix.

got em off e bay. beware any bars in the $76 dollar range. they are advertised as 1 inch and compatible with a 01 WG. they have 1 inch control/grip mounting area that is approx. 1 inch short on both ends. the clamp/mount area is knurled but most likely undersized for some reason?. maybe the galvanized sprinkler pipe they used to make them with had corroded after being in the dirt for 20 years and after sandblasting they came out undersized? you get what you pay for most of the time. I will say that physics has something to do with it. the "lever effect" has got to be huge when you clamp up a 14 inch "cheater bar" and try to keep it from twisting with the same clamp up torque used to secure a set of drag bars?.

SOUNDS like you bought some cheap crap, trying to save money, now you are throwing more time and money at them trying to make them work......suggestion...throw them away, buy the proper bars and be done with it....if your bars are correct its pretty straight forward and there are no issues...with them working correctly....

I've seen a few pairs of knurled bars slip that were chromed. Chrome will definitely contribute to slippage. I had some powder coated bars that slipped that were not knurled. I took emery paper and wrapped some 1" bar stock I had laying around and sanded all the powder coating off the risers and kinda roughed some cross hatches into them. scuffed the Powder coating on the bars right where they laid on the riser as well. They were 12" apes. After that I couldn't move them even yanking on them. Maybe try some sanding before drilling. Pinning them would have been my next option.
