Default Switchback not charging.

Post by N1265 on 27 minutes ago

Hi Guys,

Not sure if this is the right place to create this thread, if not then feel free to move it .

Here is my problem :

4 weeks ago I bought a 2013 Switchback with just over 400 ish miles on it. When I took it on my first ride of only 8 miles the battery light came on, I did some testing and found the stator was ok but the battery was not charging. I called the dealer where I got it and they replaced the battery and Regulator, the work order also states that the bike was throwing codes # p0562, p1632, and p2300 ( but I do not know what they mean ) When I got the bike back I went on a few short trips without any issues but today the battery light came on again.

The stator still checks out good but the battery is not getting any charge ( just like the last time ) I have had the bike for 4 weeks and put less than 50 miles on it and TWICE now it quits charging !

The date code on the first regulator was in 2013 and the date code on the regulator they just replaced is 2812. Both of these codes do not fall in the window of the " bad batch " of regulators. ( from what I can tell ) If I understand these codes correctly, 2812 would be the 28th week of 2012, is this correct ?

Any Idea what is going on with this bike ?

Many Thanks,

You need to ride it more than 50 miles in 4 weeks..

Keep the RPM above 2500.

The codes are all electrical based just google each one, that last one has to do with the coil, so test or replace that.

So what would be the common failure with all the error codes that makes you think the coil is causing the issue?

Either the new battery or regulator have failed or there may be a connection issue.
50 miles/2 weeks sure isn't much and probably be on a tender, but you didn't complain of difficulty starting so the battery is "probably" OK.
Have you hooked up a meter to monitor the voltage just to eliminate a false code?

Wow we agree on something.

I am not sure how he knows it is not charging.

I kinda just suspect this is some mess. But I'll throw it out there. Charge the battery. Maybe even load test it. If not charge it, wait a few days off charger and see if it starters. Half assed load test.

You can test the stator output, which should be around 20 volts AC per 1k rpm. I would just rev the bike up and see 80-100 volts AC. Also when reving up battery should go to 14.4dc ish, though you have to hook it back up.

it was just a common wear component in the system for a easy check, instead of digging further first I would eliminate the coil or it’s the problem and replace it.
electrical gremlins are the worst, I googled all the codes, a bad coil being the last code might be causing all the other codes.

If you look at all the codes, they all seem indicate low voltage..

P codes indicate issues monitored by ECM - The ECM is the only thing having issues.

P0562 Battery/ECM Voltage Low/ECM Voltage Low - Major as the ECM could be resetting..
P1632 odometer learned up - This one is odd but could be caused by low voltage and the ECM is having trouble communicating with the speedo.
P2300 Ignition coil driver low/open (front) - If the voltage is low this might trip. Again this may be the

Looking at those codes. the there is something wrong with power to the electronics. The first place I'd check is the battery terminals..

Next would be the ECM connectors..

Agreed, it’s probably deeper than the coil. But the coil is probably stock 10 years old, and still needs to be eliminated as cause. I was also assuming the battery connection was checked, and needs to be, at both ends just to eliminate that also.
I was also thinking this should have maybe 30 day dealer warranty?
