Help: Tail light lights but no brake light
#11
there are two setups i know of:
1. each circuit has its own set of leds
2. both circuits uses the same leds
on the first, a lower lumens led is used for running and higher lumen led for the brake.
on the second, same led but the running circuit runs through a resistor to drop current and when the brake circuit is applied, the controller on the led board applies the higher current by-passing the resistor.
so off machine, you can get it to function correctly by applying current to both circuits? or only one at a time? if the board controller is toast, then it will not work.

I'd start by verifying the function of the brake light switch. Disconnect the wires and short them together. If the brake lights go brite, you have a bad switch (failed open circuit).

I don't agree with your statement. A bad switch would only cause the lights to stay bright if it failed in short circuit mode. It's also possible to fail open circuit.

I want to thank everyone for their inputs. So I figured it out. Turned out to be a bad wire at the rear harness. Don't know how it happened. Possibly during reassembly after paint.
My method for diagnosing as follows:
1. Check front brake switch for continuity. OK
2. Check rear brake switch for continuity. OK
3. Check brake relay (yes there is one). OK
4. Check pins for power. No power on one that should have power when brake switch is activated. Ding we have a winner.
All is well now.

No brake lights! Similar issue?
Great read! Excellent troubleshooting.
Just bought 2000 Electra Glide Classic. It has a conversion kit for turn/brake lights.
The main tail light bulb was missing. Installed 1157 bulb, no brake lights function. Remove bulb turn signal lights come on when either brake pressed. I can hear the brake relays click with the bulb in or out. Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks to Hades02, I will start with his troubleshooting.
