Default Need help!!!

Hey everyone, I have a 2001 heritage softail with a SE120R and a SE CV51mm carb. I want to change the cams out to the woods tw-408-6, and have bobby woods rework my carb. should I do this or not?

Thanks

Change the cams but, IMHO, the cost benefit of Mr. Woods working your carb isn't there. I assume you have a programmable ignition? If not, I would be getting one and working with the timing. JMHO, but there are better cams for that motor that are not as hard on the valve train. TMan 6662-2 for one and S&S has a couple. No need to go for high compression with those big block motors; 180-185ccp is plenty. If you are running OEM lifters, get rid of them and replace with something better; almost anything is better but S&S Premiums, Gaterman or HQ Black Ops will work. . Get the bike on a dyno after cam install and dial in that carb and timing. If it were me, I would likely pull the cylinders and bore .010" OS to true up the bore and install new pistons like JE or CP.

The key to this, and I cannot stress it enough, is to have a very good spot on tune. Get her on the dyno and dial in the carb; partial throttle is very important; that's where the motor will live or die.

Do NOT use a SE clutch, that will kill you. Pro Clutch is kind of chintzy. Get a Bandit Sportsman.

Decent exhaust will play into this in a big way. Don't know what exhaust you are currently running but a decent x-pipe like the Fuel Moto or V&H Power Duals and some Crusher mellows from Kury, Jackpot or Rinehart; Or... go loud with a set of D&Ds or an older thunder header.

More than you asked for but cheap information.

Yes I have Daytona twin tec ignition. I'm assuming that the lifters are oem. What kind of lift should I look for?

I edited my previous post with some details. DTT ignition is good. Custom ignition map or dial settings? If dial settings, where are they set?

Dial settings and they are all set from factory I have not changed anything. The exhaust I am running at this time are V&H Big radius.

Check the dials for initial timing and advance curve; too little or too much timing are both bad. Start at 2/5 and advance initial until you get some ping and drop back one setting, then do the same with the advance curve.

The Daytona Twin Tec TC88 ignition for early twin cams does have dials but is also able to be mapped with a PC with the purchase of their USB cable ($80) and downloadable software from their website (free) for a more precise tune.

Understand, I run a custom map on my all bore 107" motor in my '02 FLHT. You indicated that your settings were "factory" settings which indicate, to me anyway, that you don't know what your settings are. I experimented with a variety of settings before settling on 2/5 as the best all around setting for my motor. I downloaded the 2/5 map and tweaked it a bit, mostly the WOT settings to add a bit of timing and left the partial throttle settings alone. The motor makes 122TQ/110HP and runs on 87 octane fuel. Mileage is not great at 38mpg but can't expect much better from a carbed 107" motor making that kind of power and is ridden aggressively.

Just saying that you need to know what your ignition map looks like and get the timing in a "happy" place for your motor to avoid risk of damage.

I'm not the OP, I know where my settings are. Agree with your recommendation to start tuning at 2/5 position on initial and advance dials.
