Default How do I know if bad starter/solenoid or bad compensator? - 2011 FLHR

I've been having some bad start up issues lately on my 2011 Road King Classic-FLHR w/103 with 18k miles, It's hard to describe the noises (especially on cold starts) embarrassing, irritating winding hiccup, sometimes clanging noise when pushing in the start button, and sometimes it fires right up?

Need to get this resolved before I get stranded somewhere (guess I could at least get home with a push start if that occurs?)

I'm starting with the cheapest and easiest route. (or any other suggestions?)

1st: I have a All ***** starter solenoid kit 79-1102 ($25) ordered and on the way.
2nd: Have the starter rebuilt w/new brushes etc. ($85-$100)
3rd: New compensator ($ ??)

didn't HD start using SE compensators on all touring models starting in 2011? if that even makes a difference at this point?

I had a WOODS 555 cam upgrade done at around 10k miles if it matters?

also, do I need to drain all pull the primary case off to pull the starter out to install the new solenoid kit and/or for the rebuild?

Starter pulls right out. Primary in tact. Start there. If that doesnt solve it take off primary cover and inspect compensator and starter ring gear for wear. Make sure battery is good on voltage and cranking amps.

ok thx... will start there, just recently installed a new Yuasa GYZ732HL battery w/500 CCA's, and kept on a tender, best battery purchase I've ever made.

My guess would be a bad starter clutch.. It will cause clunking, screeching and / or grinding when it starts to go. I've killed a few in my time.. My dyna just ate one..
