Hey guys been trying to figure this one out any help would be appreciated
So a friend of mine purchased a 2002 Sportser from another buddy that had been sitting for about a year with no problems prior, It started right up he drove it home about 1 hour away and the next day it had problems starting and when finally running it would start to stall either at giving gas or idling.
We cleaned out the gas tank, Dropped the bowl and carefully cleaned out the carburetor (jets also counting the rotations), put new spark plugs, and cleaned the fuel filter the bike ran great drove around for about 40 minutes then stalled out on the road and now its back to doing the same thing
I noticed the old spark plugs were fouled up with a black color before putting the new spark plugs in
Upon thinking about it would it be that the bike is running rich fouling up the spark plugs causing it to eventually stop running? My next guess is its the float needle or seat is that common to go bad from sitting?
I'm by no means a mechanic but have some basic knowledge figured i would turn to this forum , any help would be appreciated
I would purchase a carb rebuild kit along with intake manifold seals. Pay close attention to the jets when you remove/clean them. Also, I would check the condition / replace the fuel line from the tank valve to the carb. Make certain you check/set the float level correctly.
Before you go into the carb again, make sure that the ignition system is good. The symptoms you are describing could be the early onset of the ignition pick up failing or a bad connection somewhere.

Could this also cause my bike to stall while riding? I've been having a problem with my 2002 Harley Sportster 883 where at first it was popping and coughing through the carb then started to back fire then would shut off after. I would wait for a minute or less and all power would come back on. So i bought a new battery for it also ended up buying circuit breaker as well and a new ign. Module and cleaned out my carb. I turned it on ran it for about 30 mins it ran great no more back fire coughing or anything. Then I turned it off let it cool down for about 20 mins and drove it again. This time as I was driving on the freeway it stalled again. But no backfire or cough or anything. Any idea what it could be ?I'm waiting for my new ignition coil but at this point I'm pulling my hair!
