49 mm forks require the height of the fluid level measured from the top of the tube with the fork fully compressed
A scale [precision ruler] works fine. Check the manual
The special tool or a facsimile thereof is needed for the nut, works great.
I like the amsoil medium fork oil for the front
Then what I think I'll do is start with 24 oz. Take out the axle and wheel, leave the tube in the trees and pump up the lowers and make my measurement.. Can anyone confirm if 110 mm is the depth of the correct oil level from the top of the tube? 2013 FXDB. Thanks..
My 2018 Touring manual says an initial fill of 24 ounces Type E oil, then measure as shown below. Or as was mentioned previously, you can measure with a good machinist rule, which is what I did.
Filling and Final Assembly
1. Clamp fork slider vertically in FORK TUBE HOLDER
(PART NUMBER: HD-41177).
2. See Figure 3-70. Remove fork sleeve (3), spacer (4) and
spring (5) from fork tube.
3. Pour slightly more than 24 fl oz (710 ml) TYPE 'E'
HYDRAULIC FORK OIL directly into the fork tube.
4. Slowly pump fork tube until some resistance is felt. Then
pump a few more times.
I got everything back together tonight with the Progressive springs and what they say their level should be which was 150 mm from the top.. I ended up using 22 oz per side.. I also made the plugs a 1/2" over what they said to do. I like a form feel.. I can always shorten them if they're to stiff.. Tomorrow's ride will tell me...
