Default Leaking oil like a SOB

I have been around bikes my whole life and paid morre attention to the women more than what my ol man was trying to show me and now I am paying for it. My ol man gave me a 78 or 79 ironhead on a rigid frame he built almost 30 years ago and its giving me problems. It sat for a few years at my uncles and I just started riding it a few months ago. I took it to two different people to work on and 3 months and almost 2grand later I decided to do it myself. The last thing I had fixed was the carb rebuilt. Since I got it back anytime I get over 60 it starts poping and spuddering. I called the guy who fixed it he told me that the float was really low and that he set it high so it might need to be brought back down a little. Also its leaking oil like a son of a bitch. Its looks like its goming from the gasket between the heads and the jugs. Also I got a **** load of oil on the frame behind the pipes but I checked the pipes and they are dry. I was looking on how to tell what year it is and also when to find a manuel to pull it kinda apart and change the gaskets and rings. Be patient I am learning the joy of old thrashers hahaha. Any help? If it would make it easier call me @ (352)222-6164 or just email me if you can help. Thanks

this link gives a bit of information about frames but also tells you about VINS and serial numbers

Default frame

Not really concerned with the frame I already know its an after market rigid frame but I am trying to find a site that will help me figure if the motor is a 78 or 79 also I am looking for a book to help me with a tear down.

Sorry I don't know much about the older stuff. I've only been riding HDs since they started putting electric starters on them. :-)

no numbers located anywhere on the engine itself?

yea I figured it out. Its a 77, also I ordered the book so I can tear it down. I am not loosing any compression so I won't do the rings and I just plan on replacing all the gaskets on the top end. Thanks for taking the time though.

I use the Clymer and the HD manuals.
Excess oil is vented out a pipe in the cam cover below the generator that could be dumping onto the frame behind the pipes.
Redoing the top-end is easy and you will learn alot and save $$$ doing it yourself...not to mention person satisfaction of doing the job yourself.

Yea man I just picked up the Clymer book off e-bay for $10 so I am about to yank it apary and replace the top end gaskets. The compression is good but I might just change the rings since they will be right there.
