easy way, non abrasive???

In the engine or out?

Either way soak with an over the counter combustion chamber cleaner or Sea-Foam. Carbon/varnish should wipe off.

best thing I've ever found was a can of Aircraft Remover. Doesn't harm aluminum. Cleaned up my 110ci pistons from black to beautiful in an hour or so. You can either spray them or get the gallon can and soak them in a small pan instead. Works like a champ!
