Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I'm considering a engine change and looking for suggestions. The 06 Ultra Standard comes with the 88ci cast colored engine.
I do long distance rides (500klm every two weeks down to the coast and back on the weekend to visit family/mom).
I've added Cruise control and stage 1 on to the Ultra, but want more power when carting weight on the back.
Whats my options?
1) S&S big bore kit to 95
2) Engine replacement
3) Engine replacement/tranny
4) sell bike and get something newer with engine of your choice.
Looking for any suggestions recommendations before I commit one way or another.
Bore to 98"
Andrews 26 cams
Mild headwork, with 1.900" intakes, 1.610" exhaust valves.
9.6 cr
No frills, straightforward combo.
You'll have plenty more power to haul that extra weight then, and your fuel economy should come up also.

Depends how much ya like your bike if ya want to trade or throw money into it?? Properly building your 88 up to 98 will run circles around a stage 1 103 but ya still got a '06 standard?
depend ow much milleage u av on the 06 the 26 and bore ur cylinder to 98 is a good option but if u av 90000 miles the rest of ur engine still av 90000 bottom end i just do a 98ci with an andrews 57 cam and ported head on my road king and love it
This winter I put S&S 2+2 exhaust, all chrome handle controls, 1st stage c/w Power Commander 5, sound system and cruise control. She has 50K klms on the motor. Last fall saw the addition of the big box, very nice cushions for the lady and I, new threads for the wheels and oil cooler.
Well that's the crunch of the situation. Do I spend the year making her run great and look smart or do I let go and start a new project. It will take another 5 to 8K to get her to where I would like the bike to be or do I stop the madness and start anew.
A normal year see's me putting 10-15K KLMs on my bikes so the mileage thing is a concern. The newer bikes 09 and newer have the frame changes and ABS which are in my mind important improvements even without consideration of the motor updates to 103 and 110 ci's (and the 6 speed tranny would be a nice touch).
There's no bling on a standard and for those of us whom worship all things chromed, just getting some shinny parts on the motor will drop me some serious cash as well.
Common sense would see me updating to a newer bike with much of the above inherited with a the newer bike, but there's little of that in this passion. I get the most satisfaction out of taking something raw and building up to the final product I see in my minds eye.
Thank you for your responses. As usual this forum presents multiple perspectives which I find most informative and practical.
