1997 Electra Glide (FLHTC U-I) STARTING PROBLEM :(
Recently I have had a few occasions when my 1997 Fuel Injected Electra Glide doesn't want to start
After a few days of not using the bike I pull it out, turn the ignition on, let it prime its self and hit the starter, The engine will turn over but not fire. Then after trying it 5 or more times it starts just like it should ???
I'm planning to ride down the Slovenia (through 7 country's) from the UK next month and really want to sort this before I go.

Then crank(turn over) and you rest, then you crank and you rest, then crank and you rest but it will not start correct?
Then it will crank and start like nothing happened leaving you to scratch your head.
Take a look at the bottom of timer cover...your right foot floor board...look for black wire that exits the bottom of timer cover.
See the tan/beige goo?
That is the CAM sensor sealant melting.
The original has a beige/tan sealant goo.
Your cam sensor is on the way out.
The cam sensor is part number 32448-95a. Double check number for your application.
It is a do it yourself replacement part and requires very little parts removal if you use some cut allen/hex keys to remove the two bolts on the plate that holds wire...
Some say you can use a cheaper part but it has not worked for others since the sensor is suppose to match cup.
I have replaced with original.
There is also a CRANK sensor connector that can get loose.
The crank position sensor starts by the oil filter and works its way around the bike and crosses to other side of bike to the computer near seat saddle bag area..
The CRANK sensor connector can get loose..it is a push and turn connector and it can easily get loose if a zip tie (plastic wire holder to frame) is missing.
Check that connector to make sure it is tight and tie it down two or three times...the sensor is OK..
the problem is the CRANK connector and is part 32447-95..do NOT replace the part...just make sure it is tight.
Here is a link for a parts finder:

Also,
Take a look at your fuel hose for leaks at the swivel under the tank.
They leak after about 10 years.
The Goodridge brand HDFL005 are much cheaper than the harley parts for TWO hoses.
Finally, look in the tank for garbage..
The gas tank liner has a tendency to release one piece the one time from the center bottom of tank that is about the size of a Euro coin..
That one piece is enough to block the fuel filter sock..
Causing motor to become fuel starved..
Drain tank from the top with a wide hose, suction/remove the loose liner piece, filter fuel and return to tank...done.

I had the exact same problem with my 98 RKC. Bike sat for a week, tried to start it Monday morning and it's turning over but won't start. Sounds a little sick too. So after a few tries I opened the throttle up a little and it roared to life. That afternoon I start it up to go home from work and it's business as usual, started up like nothing ever happened. Ran great once I got it started too.
So my theory for now is that after sitting for a while the throttle plate got stuck closed and the little stepper motor couldn't push it out. That or the bike is just pissed at me for letting it sit so long.
