Correct Speedo?
Not sure what is the correct sdpeedo that came on this bike, 1988 FXSTC. The one on here has the digital odometer, but it seems that its from a newer bike, but not sure. The speedo does not work and the didgital display does not work either. The front wheel has the speedo cable drive unit, no cable. But I think this speedo is for an electric sender (I need to pull the dash to verify). The PO gave me a Dakota rear wheel sender that he said he could not get to work with this speedo. I am just looking to get the speedo to work weather its this one or a different one. Any advice? Thanks!

That whole dash is from a later model . In 88 they were all mechanical gages and the dash only had 3 lights oil, high beam and neutral .and the metal part only goes just past the switch then there is a rubber piece that covers the rest to the seat .I'll be home in a day I have a 88 fxstc I'll take a pic of the dash for you

Your bike had a mechanical speedo that drove from the front wheel. The speedo you HAVE is a '96 or later speedo that is driven from an electrical signal taken from the transmission. If you have the original transmission in your bike, there's no provision for the sender unit in the tranny. If you had it, it would be on the right rear top of the tranny, just behind the top cover.

Drag Speciaties drive unit is a direct replacement. Matching speedo cable. Search eBay for a speedometer for an appropriate model preferably with believable miles or that is close to your title's stated mileage.

Unfortunately, I have no idea how many miles are on it, especially since the speedo has been replaced. I will look for the later sending unit provision on the trans, but I doubt it will be there. I will also look into a mechanical replacement, what ratio and thread do I need? Sorry for the newbie questions, trying to learn

The DS one I mentioned is direct replacement. This assumes you're running a stock tire, wheel, bearing and axle. I should have asked that first.

I like the dash I have and would like to leave it, just need to get the speedo for it. I would assume the tire, wheels, etc are stock of some sort, but who know what has been done to it over the last 20+ years. Anything obvious that I should look for? I would hate to open a can of worms for the speedo?

I'm not sure what ratio you have (it is either 1:1 or 2:1).
If I were you I would go to the dealer and ask. I can't tell you how many times I have done that to find a part number or other info I needed at the time.
It doesn't really matter what ratio you have as long as the pick up and speedo have the same ratio.
