When the tips of the sprocket teeth are sharp. In the case of the sliding parts, when the surface starts to break up

A knocking noise from clutch area. Replaced primairy and clutch hub bearings. Finally found when in high gear and moving wheel back and forth and looked like excessive play at compensator moving back and forth. Replace comp spring and then ok,spring heights where the same, started about 90,000+ .

I believe there's a few parts that could be worn. The teeth, the spring pack or the fingers that the whole unit moves on itself. Is it apart? Post some pics I did that with mine when it was off to have the experts take a look.

I personally have never seen or heard of a evo 5 speed one going bad. The newer twincam ones have problems. That I have experienced.

It's a four speed but Don't think the tranny matters.

Then stop looking! Your compensator is the same design that has been used for decades and up to the end of the TC88s. They are not known to have any problems. I have replaced my sprocket and chain, but only because the teeth were sharp and the chain showing signs of stretching. They are known to do in excess of 100k miles. Comp problems are a TC96 and later thing, so you can sleep easy at night!
