I'm new to this. I've got a few questions about my 1989 FLHTC. I'm replacing the cam, lifters, and going with adjustable pushrods. My question is, should I run the factory plastic breather tube or go with a S&S steel one or can I use one of the reed valve breathers ? Also should I drill the block and put the later model oil pump on it (93 and up EVO) or is that more than just drilling a hole and getting a new pump ? I'm just crusing so the RPM's should stay under 3500 most of the time. On the cam that's in the bike now it has a L stamped in it on the spacer side. ( Any ideas who's this is) ? The bike only has 29000 miles on it and everything looks good so far. I had a friend that has a machine shop do my heads and jug boring. I do have the Harley factory repair manual so hopefully I won't get to lost. Thanks in advance for advice and knowledge.

Welcome. The breather gear set up you will get several opinions. They run them all. If you wanted new the factory set up has run 100k on several evo's. The L cam is a factory cam. What compression are you shooting for? Pics would be cool too. No help on the oil pump.
Cams have been done to death in here! Use Search for 'EV27' and stand back. That is probably the most popular Evo cam, from Andrews, although their EV13 gets good write-ups as well. I can't see any benefit from messing with the oil pump and taking a drill bit anywhere near a built engine is a big NO-NO IMHO. As for adjustable push-rods they are not necessary as it seems you have the heads off.
I would go with the S&S Breather. I have always had great success with S&S. For cams, I have no opinion. I'm staying stock for long life of my old bike. I wouldn't mess with the oil pump. Seems like a breaking of the rule: "Don't fix what ain't broke".
