Default Seat options?

The foam on the seat on my EG is pretty much perished, so doing something about that is on my winter list.

There's an upholstery shop near by. Went over and talked to them. Got some sticker shock. They want $200 ish to replace the foam. I also asked about getting a full recover with some fancy leather, and they are talking $1200.

Um, no.

So I was talking to Mark, the Indy Next Door (everyone needs an Indy Next Door), and he said "Why not look at a Corbin? Cheaper, and they can come with a heater." Hadn't thought of a heater. That might be nice.

A few specific questions:

- Any recommendations for a shop to send it off for a proper re-covering (for something less than $1200). I confess to liking the tan leather seat on the new Roadmaster, and am thinking of going with something like that.

- Any point in going with a new Corbin (or other aftermarket version) rather than just getting my stocker re-covered?

- Any experience with a heater? That seems like it might be really nice for stretching an extra month out of the season at both ends. OR it sounds like a dumb way to waste money.

Only problem with tan leather is it will show dirt and stains. If you're okay with the leather looking "aged", then okay.

Check out "Mean City Cycles" I think they are a sponsor. I've read lots of good stuff about them. I have a Corbin on my '97, great seat lots of miles on it.

You might want to check out Ultimate Seats. I got one several years ago. It has held up well, and is the MOST comfortable seat I've ever had. Corbins have been described to me as expensive leather covered bricks....YRMV

We have a Corbin on the Glide and love it. Bought it new back in '02 and we have travelled widely on it ever since. The original would soon bottom out - that is to say our butts would bottom out on the seat base! It had to go.

Indeed. I'd like nothing more than for this thing to look like Ben Zobrist's ball glove ten years from now.

Another vote for Corbin!

Is there something unique about their pan? Can I get a similar result having my seat re-foamed?

Or like the old brown Brooks professional saddle on my road bicycle.

Their pan is glass-fibre and both heavy and very stiff. There isn't much actual padding on it, it is a clever shape that happens to suit both Mrs B and I. I'm sure that a competent seat specialist can use your base to provide a superior end result to a stock Harley seat. Another possibility is Mustang, who make a more plush touring seat.

I have a Corbin on the Wide Glide, ordered it new at the MC show at the Javits Center in 1999 (20% show discount), still on the bike, still serving me well. So thumbs up for Corbin.

As far as re-foaming, we had the seat in my wife's GMC truck redone after 100k miles. Just the bottom of the drivers seat, she drives solo 95% of the time. The new foam was very stiff and though better then the flattened out stuff, not OEM if you know what I mean. This was a reputable upholstery place that does cars, boats etc. My 2 cents.
