I have this guy I know, he has a 1998 ultra. His wife told me last night that it has sit for years. She said it was in terrible shape. He tried to sell it and apparently can't hardly give it away. If I understood what she was saying, that bike has been sitting out in the weather for years along with his 2003 model ultra, which also hasn't run.....in years.
I suspect there are lots of bikes tucked away in forgotten corners all around the World, awaiting discovery as 'barn finds' or whatever. I know of a pre-War Packard car.....
A pre-war Rudge Ulster sold a while ago with just 14 miles (or a similar small number) on the speedo. Apparently the owner frightened himself riding it home from the shop and never rode it again, then went off to War and didn't come home.
I saw an early 70s FLH locally on craigslist awhile back for a really low price- had sat in a barn for decades. Would be a fun project to do a full rebuild on one, but I have way too many other projects going on.
A few years ago there was a craigs add for a motorcycle. In the picture was a 50's panhead complete but rusty and a ton of dirt and dust on it.
The person bought a place up in the Adirondacks and it was in the shed out back. He wanted $1200 or BO. I was the second person to respond and he said if the other guy didn't want it he would call me. The next day i called him and he told me the guy who showed up said it was not road worthy and had dry rotted tires and such.. So the fellow GAVE it to him, I didn't even bother to educate him... That is the closest i have come to a barn find.

What a story ... life just isn't fair sometimes. What a cheek of the first buyer, he must have struggled to keep a straight face until he was half way down the road.
Not quite in the same league but I was offered a 2003 V-ROD that had spent its entire life sat on carpet in a central heated apartment. Rich guy bought it, got the shop to remove the battery and fluids, and then had it as an ornament.
Died, widow did not know what to do with it. Apart from flipping it fast, I could not muster up any enthusiasm for it at all.
It does make you wonder sometimes what other worlds some people live in.
But why a V-ROD? Hardly the most emblematic H-D. Instant loss investment. Some people just have no taste I am afraid. I mean, even a VROD owner would have suggested a better collectible for the same money.
