Default Intake Options?

I'd like to get a higher flow intake for my '90 FLHTC, but I want to retain the stock cover.

What are my options?

The Arlen Ness Big Sucker looks promising, but is only listed for '93+ (top breathers). I can't think of any reason it wouldn't work anyway (my breather hose is routed under the bike already) but thought I'd ask.

From what I can tell, the MoCo has discontinued the required Screamin Eagle part. Is it worth trying to track one down anyway?

Any thoughts/guidance would be most appreciated.

The way you fabbed your radio elimination kit then I am sure you can make the stock a/c cover work.
I find the spike and cone looking filters a little goofy myself. Again,I know I'm in the minority here. Function over form I suppose.

Use a K&N replacement filter element and drill big holes in the plastic backplate (ensuring all of them sit outside of the filter footprint so you don't suck in unfiltered air).

This will work just as well as any expensive aftermarket stuff.

Bigger doesn't always mean faster but it usually means $$$$ in somebody else's pocket...

You can use the Ness a/c on your bike. You just have to use different mounting bolts where the backing plate mounts to the head.and make up some spacers. Do a google search, a lot of people have adapted a Big Sucker to bottom breather Evos. Todd

I got the screamin eagle kit from surdyke one or two years ago for my 95 Heritage.

Sorry Omaha. haven't messed any with a cv set ups but have to agree with Spanners. A 1" wider K&N with a spacer kit to mount the outer cover is a great way to go.

Bought a complete Screamin Eagle Twinkee setup on Ebay for the $1.95, it is flooded with them and no bids sometimes. Football cover was discarded and the Evo cover went on, this was on the 89" in the upper sig

So glad you said that. As I was noodling on this, I kept wondering if that would work. Why not, right?

So last night I pulled it back apart, contemplated the backplate for a while, contemplated the size of the existing intake port, and ended up deciding that what I wanted to do was "honeycomb" it. Ended up drilling 40 1/4" holes (works out to about 2 sq in total area) across a few of the "flat" areas.

I'm leery of butt-dyno results ("a man sees what he wants to see" and all that), but the difference, particularly at highway speeds, seems very noticeable. The combination of the lower-restriction Paughco mufflers, the airbox butchery and the carb fiddling seems to have come together quite nicely. The only part I don't have is the K&N. Instead, I'm running some cheapo K&N look-alike that I got locally last year. For $12, it's a bargain.

Called my local HD parts desk and asked them about that. Turns out that part number is for '93+ head breathers. They said they could get it, but sourcing the spacers and such I'd need to adapt it to a bottom breather was on me.
