Default Starting tips

Just wondered if anyone had any starting tips for me so I don't look like a idiot all the time

I seem to have the hot start ok now, I crank her with no choke and no throttle until I hear the rear decompressor pop then give it a small bit of throttle and the front one pops and she's all good.

If I throttle too early I get the horrible metal on metal clack sound
Which I'm still not sure what it i..? starter clutch?

Going back to a cold start seems to be a little more difficult, I pull choke out fully and press in my decompressors and crank her over and it just cranks and cranks, and after a couple of goes it normally makes a slightly less loud metal clack but a clack none the less and then fires up.

Any tips would be great.

Was trying to research high torque starter motor or clutch I'm not clues up on these components but should I really need one with manual compression releases.

I don't know the compression ratio I just know the cylinders were re bored after the rear cylinder threw a Gudgon pin and high compression positions were put in, also screaming eagle cams and Milkuni hsr42

If it's coming from the primary area I suspect its the starter drive gear hitting the teeth on the starter ring gear.
Mine did that until it finally broke some teeth.

I fixed it by installing one of these

I haven't had a problem since.

As far as your cold starts go, have you tried different positions on your choke? Mine is just stock, but I don't use any choke for cold starts in the summer months. On cold days I usually get by with 1/2 or less.

I see you have a Mikuni HSR42 on your bike. I have the same carb and getting a reliable "first crank" start in cold weather has eluded me for years.

Above 60F, I pull out the enrichener all the way, no throttle, hit the button and the bike fires right up. I then close the enrichener part way to regulate the idle speed and warm up the motor a bit.

Below 60F I need to give the accelerator pump a shot or two to "prime" the motor before cranking it plus full enrichener. This is where it gets fun. As the temp gets colder (below 50-55F), the bike will start, and run until it burns off the "priming" shot of fuel, at which point it will die. Prime it again and try again, same thing. Eventually after 3-10 tries the bike will stay running. Below 40F it's pretty dicey as to whether the bike will start cold, and below 32F-forget it. It's not going to happen!

I can only conclude that the Mikuni "enrichener" circuit is rather anemic, and can't provide enough fuel to keep a cold engine running in cold weather.
