I had the drain plug on the primary leak a few months ago. I replaced it and have been checking the level in the primary on a regular basis. I recently checked it and it was low. So I added fluid. I also checked the engine oil and it was higher than normal but not extreme. Returned from a ride and noticed oil leaking from the vent tube under the frame. When I checked the level on the engine oil it was FULL and the primary fluid was low again. Does this mean that the main crank seal is leaking between the primary and the crank case?

 

Since that is the only way to get primary fluid into your engine I would say yes.

 

I was afraid of that.

 

I have seen it happen because the screws for the stator wire clip were missing.

 

I too have seen that a couple of times. This can happen when a careless repair person fails to put the screws back into the case. The small screws are tapped all the way thru the primary side of the case, so if they are left out...then the oil can transfer when things get nice and hot inside the engine case.

 

You can fix this no problem. You caught it early. Now, depending on what year your case is, you might have to inspect the steel insert. I believe the issue on inserts were from 89-91, but don't quote me.

Only special tool needed is 5" x 2" PVC, and you can do this with the stator on. Good luck.
