Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I just found out today where my engine oil is going, into my primary! I bought the bike last fall 2008 FXDL with a 96 cu. in. engine. At that time I checked the fluids and the engine was a little overfull and the primary had an extra quart of oil in it. No big deal, I thought the PO just overfilled it. I put exactly 1 qt. in the primary and drained back the engine to the proper level. Well, after I started riding the bike this year (almost 500 mile so far), I noticed my engine oil was low so i filled it back up to full. I took a 70 mile ride today and when I got back the engine checked almost a quart low again. After reading a few threads here I decided to drain my primary. Walaa! about 2.5 qts came out. People mention on here maybe the crankshaft seal is bad. What am I looking at to get this fixed. Thanks for your replies.
Did the repair myself. Cost $14. $6 for a new seal and $8 for a 1-3/16" socket. Found out after opening up primary that the PO had already replaced the seal once before. So this is the 3rd crankshaft seal to go into this engine. Don't know if this is a common failure or not. The repair itself was a piece of cake to do. The biggest part was removing the seal and that was easy once I drilled 2 small holes in it and used a small slide hammer to bang it out.
drained primary oil to adjust baker manuel chain adjuster. got over a quart and a half out, looked suspicious so measured it.
yep engine oil low by exactly that much.

only 1-2k? miles sense I changed primary oil.
ez job but a little time consumeing so going to see if i can push it off til the fall.....
Im going to watch it closely and blow some cleaner through the breather tubes that go to the street,I did a upgrade/replacement of the stator over a year ago thinkin maybe i disturbed the spacer in there on the shaft/seal area...? or maybe some back presure from the another place like the relief on the rockers?..but i dout that although might check that and throw in some rockouts while im there.I just dont want to replace it and not look for the cause. maybe its just bad luck? comp torque? my imagination its just a bad dream lol
