New to this forum. Spent a couple hours looking thru posts to see if this was covered, but couldn't find it, so I'll just ask. I have a 96 FXDL dyna low rider that was converted to syn3 for primary, tranny and engine before i bought it. I have a problem with the primary oil leaking into engine. Every few hundred miles I have to drain some oil from engine oil tank and add some to the primary. I have had the local Harley shop work on this problem twice, replacing all the gaskets and seals between the primary and the engine, but still have the same problem. Have even gone back to regular HD primary fluid in the primary to see if the syn3 is the problem, but the only difference is now i'm mixing standard primary fluid in with my syn3 engine oil when it leaks into the engine. That can't be a good thing - despite what the service manager says. I have decided from what I've read in this forum that I'll probably switch to the mobil 1 v-twin for my primary and engine, but in the meantime I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this problem and if anyone could give me ideas on what the problem could be. All I can guess at this point is that if they have replaced everything that they claim to have, I either have a pinhole or a warped surface. Any Help?
I had engine oil leaking into my primary past the seal. Replaced the seal and all was good. Another potential leak spot is the screws that hold the alternator stator wires to the engine case. Also, replacing the seals doesn't work if the surface is boogered up, or if the shaft is hosed.
Convert to a primary belt and then you can run it dry. Can't leak if there is no oil to leak!
Thought about your problem for a couple days and the only thing I could come up with is you are getting a lot of pressure in the primary while you are riding. You my want to look into venting the primary.
if it's not the engine seal then the tech needs to do a pressure test.
usually the engine is going into the primary. a somewhat annoying occurance that the 87 big twins had an issue with. (ask me how) have a tech go a search on porus engine cases from back in 88-89. i don't think you are having this problem but it doesn't hurt to check.
fortunately i worked for HD at the time and was able to wangle the bad cases under warranty.
