Carb overflowing from accelerator pump rod.
Hey there. Ive got a 1998 EVO Road King. Havent ridden too much this year as its pretty wet here in the UK till May. Last week l noticed gas leaking out onto my pushrod casing. First thought, perished accelerator pump diaphram, so bought a kit and had it shipped from the US. Fixed it myself. Diaphram, rod boot, spring and two little rubber O rings. Still leaking. Replaced the float bowl gasket. Still leaking. Seems to be coming from the rod boot. But thats been replaced. Cant see any blockages or worn parts. Now if l dont remember to turn the pet **** off, it floods my garage with gas and fumes!
Losing the will to live....
Any ideas out there?

So far you're addressing the symptom, not the cause. Fuel is leaking past the float needle/seat when the bike is shut off. Either there's dirt preventing the needle from seating or the needle and seat is worn. Clean or replace the float needle and check the float height. Make sure the float isn't leaking and preventing the float from "floating" and shutting off the fuel. This is unlikely with modern plastic floats, but worth checking.
Also, get in the habit of shutting off the gas when you shut off the bike.

Yeah, what carb.
Identify exactly where the leak is coming from. If it is the overflow tube, then I would suspect the needle valve. If it is actually from the accelerator pump diaphragm or the metal thing that screws in place to hold the diaphragm. There should be no gas at all on the non-bowl side of the diaphragm. If there is, something is wrong.
And they put the gas shut off valve on the bikes for a reason.

Its a stock Kehin CV carb with a THUNDERBIKE airfilter. Yes, bad habit of not turning off the pet ****. But lve had the bike for 14years without this problem. As l said the gas is coming up through the pump rod and rubber boot. Bottom plate is dry inside and out. No residue inside (under the diaphram).

Assuming yours is a CV, the accelerator pump diaphragm is bad. Gas cannot get to that area any other way. Also, replace the "square" o-ring while you have the cover is off. Only 3 screws - takes longer to get the air filter box off than it does to fix it.

They used that same pump from the early butterfly carbs thru the CVs. Some take a different o-ring is why you get 2 in the kit. I just replaced mine a month ago - wasn't leaking but the fabric was showing. It was the original in a '93 carb so I got my moneys worth out of that one. They usually don't last that long and I always keep a spare in the Tour Pack.
