Default How do I remove/change the float valve seal on an Evo carb?

I've got the float bowl off and am changing rubber parts inside, but don't know the proper way to get the float valve seal out. Is it as simple as getting something in there and pulling it out? What do you use? The reason the carb's apart in the first place is that gas was pouring out of the overflow hose, so I assume that the float valve wasn't closing. I haven't soaked the floats yet to make sure that they're not leaking, but they didn't seem to have any fuel in them when I took them out of the carb. Thanks, guys. Oh, and it's a '95 Heritage.

If it has a Keihin CV carb then the float needle (float valve) should be the only serviceable part of the float assembly. I have used very fine emery cloth to clean up the inside of the needle seat but other than that I have never tried to replace one. I think they are pressed in. Have you checked the float level? On my old '91 it would leak gas while it sat on the stand but not when upright. It didn't matter what parts I replaced or where I set the float level. So I just started shutting off the petcock when I parked it.

Ask over in the Evo forum, that is where I get the best results.

Since you have the bowl off already you should just have to push the hinge pin out that holds the float in and the Needle valve will be attached to the top of the float. If the rubber tip on the top of the valve is not a really nice sharp point it prob needs replacing. I had this same problem about a month ago and took mine apart and cleaned everything with carb cleaner and fixed the problem. Guess I had some junk in there keeping the needle valve from closing off the fuel and it was pouring fuel not just dripping.

I've only had the bike a short time, but on the first real ride with it it poured gasoline out of the overflow tube. I didn't notice for an hour and a half, and I have no idea how long it leaked for. I fired up the bike and the fuel stopped leaking, so I rode it home without issue. When I got home the bike wasn't leaking, but I turned the petcock off and put a pan under it anyway. The next day I rode it for 20 some odd miles to work and immediately after shutting it down it poured gasoline, so once again I killed the petcock but started the motor up to empty the bowl. On the ride home it was pouring rain out, but I did notice the bike was chugging a bit sporadically. At a stoplight with the engine running I looked down and saw fuel pouring out again, now with the engine running. I was very glad it was raining, for once. Naturally that was the last time I rode it. I'm thinking that the float was stuck down or that the valve wasn't seating at all. Pulled it apart, float doesn't bubble when submerged, but it wasn't stuck either. Valve looks good, actually, but I'll replace it while it's out. I'm hoping the rebuilt kit and carb cleaning fixes it.

Yeah that's what mine was doing. One time it would leak and then the next it would be fine. I'd say that will fix it.

Like gr69 and dwatkins I had this problem too. It was the needle being jammed up with crap. I took an old toothbrush and just cleaned the float, bowl and 2 needles out with more gasoline and it has not given me a prob since. Mine is an S&S Super E though.

Might check the float level also. It is usually part of the rebuild procedure.
