^^^ Good Question... I believe the Early [Shovelhead] Shocks are 12-1/2... but would need to go out to check... The MoCo seems to have went at least a few different lengths..
Someone who posses a Known Unmolested 1986 FXRS will be the Best Option... Unless you trust the online Parts Fiche... They are not Gospel...
An alternative is 13", which was the stock length for the Touring models and similar to those fitted to the FXRT. A pal of mine had a 1990 FXRS for many years and that always seemed to me to sit quite tall, compared with the other FXR models of that era. I'm not sure if that was an illusion! Thinks - perhaps his bike was an FXRS Sport.....

Went and looked... busted that **** doin it... but... The Shovel FXRS is 12-1/2 inch shocks.. the later post '91 is 12".. But.. It occurs to me.. I do Not recall what year the MoCo changed Struts and therefor Shock angle??? Gonna have some bearing on what is Correct... me thinks
Are you looking to "restore" one? I only ask because like mentioned above there are plenty of variables and unless trying to restore one to a factory spec I think the shock length that works best for you would be what I suggest replacing with.
Race, I think 86 is when they changed the struts? But then again I think the RPs still ran them? Dam it gets a bit confusing haha
I suggest running or converting to RP/RT struts plus some 14" rear shocks from a 2008 era 1200R and some 26" fork tubes................. But I like mine way in the air apparently haha
Restore, no. Just clean up, make sound and ride. This winter is rebuild fork, front brakes and rear shocks. I'll need new tires before spring too and I'm cleaning up some minor wiring issues.
