my 85 had electrical problems from the day I bought it new. it was just enough to annoy the hell out of me, but I stayed with it. I don't know what I did but about 2008 they all went away. I had a stator and regulator go out on me since then but that was caused by one of the screws holding the stator had the head break off and it got tangled up with the windings and burned it out along with the regulator.
