Default Need some direction

On the wiring harness, right before plugging into the two tail light connector's that feeds the tail light and rear turn signal's the PO installed these two modules/relays

On all of these aftermarket electrical splices, it has electrical tape coming apart, neatly soldered but most of the heat shrink tubing easily slides off the splices.

Here's my question/s

I will be converting all lighting to LED's

What is the purpose of the red relay and the smaller black one, and if i'm going to LED to I need them

If I DO NEED THEM, if cleaning around all the wiring with alcohol and applying liquid tape to lock the heat shrink in place a good idea, or am I making a mess down the road.

Don't know if this plays a part BUT the rear fender is not stock for the FXSTC, it appears to be from a FLS model.

Never fooled with LED on older Bikes... but, assume you need at least a Ballast resistance in the turn signal line...unless a solid state Flasher is used...

Neither of those are OEM equipment and I'm not sure what they do.
When I got my '94 FXSTC it had a Kuryakyn turn signal module that turned the rear turn signals into brake lights.
When it went south it did so very intermittently that it took a while to figure out.

Badlands has a good reputation and IIRC they act as a ballast and make it so you can run led's in your turn signals.

Possibly load equalizers. Where they wired in series with your turn signals?. Necessary on our older bikes if your going to run LED's..

Since the bulbs I pulled out were standard oem, I'm leaning towards what you stated.

as I mentioned before, I'm leaving all the wiring hanging loose for easy access to repair/replace any electrical problems.

I have the Kuryakyn module in mine and since I have it somewhat apart here’s a picture of it.

On the smaller black one, barely legible print "canceling"

What is the purpose of having that red relay. Is it to turn all rear lights into brake lights ?

yes, it turns the turn signals into brake lights also. Had to install red lenses to comply with the law.

A friend of mine had had one of those modules that turns the rear turn signals into running and brake lights, he got his from the MOCO. it was on his 08 Heritage Classic. After the first battery shorted to less them 6 volts I checked his charging system and the only fault I could find was an intermittent regulator. So we replaced it.. 200 miles later same thing but this time we could only figure it was the cheap Advance Auto battery. All charging system tests passed.. it turned out that module to switch everything over on the rear was back feeding the front signals as well and it was killing his batteries almost like a dead short on the battery..I believe it was feeding through the ground circuit of the lights to the front.. They actually lit the element but very dimly. I suggested he get rid of it and we did... And we got rid of his battery issues...
