Default Softail swingarm compatibility

Googled this one, but to no avail...

I recently bought a ‘96 Heritage and it came with a wide (240) rear tyre with corresponding wide swingarm.

Not a big fan of wide rears, so trying to downsize it a bit. Got a set of wheels from 2013 Fat Boy and also there is a chance to get 2008 Fat Boy swingarm.

The question is whether this 2007+ swingarm will fit Evolution frame without major adjustments (minor ones are Ok)?

I am also worried due to shocks mounting on the swingarm - I believe this should have changed from 1996 to 2008...

Or maybe it’s just a good argument for changing the shocks altogether (they are old stock)...

No the newer swingarm won't work with what you have if it's an evo style frame. Different bearing styles and shock styles. Buy an evo style swingarm. If you're in Florida you could have my spare

Edit: well it says your in Russia. So good luck with that

Yeah, not so easy to find spares for Evo here)

Also, stock Evo swingarm (150 wheel width) won’t accomodate 200 rear wheel from 2007+ Fat Boy, I believe.

With regards to bearings style - that should not be a problem, I believe (you can always buy bearings with specific dimensions). Replacing the shocks should not be a problem if it does not involve re-welding of the shock attachment points on the frame/swingarm...

But the 240 swingarm will...just use the existing swingarm for the 200...just change the spacers...it will work fine..

Yep, that’s the base case, and I already have the spacers ready. The point is that I am trying to build a narrow bobbed bike and that wide swingarm seems a bit too wide for a 200 wheel, just does not look right (you have to take out around 2 inches by the spacers).

At least that’s how it looks before I put all the relevant stuff on (brake caliper, belt, new bobbed rear fender etc)... Don’t know if it will get better in final form, but anyway want to have some backup option.

Rewelding it to make it more narrow is obviously much more PITA than trying to find another one that will fit...

What rim width does the wheel have?

I just put an 06 swingarm in my 95. Only had to change pivot bearings to the evo style for it to bolt right in.

2007-2017 Fat Boy wheels rear rim is 6”, so that will be tough...

Did you have to change the caliper/mounting? Maybe there is a bit more free space in the stock Evo swingarm if you play with that.

‘06 swingarm should fit just fine, right. Width-wise it’s the same as Evo swingarm, AFAIK. So gives nothing in terms of wider (than stock) wheel. Or am I wrong here?

Anyway, I am getting that 2007+ swingarm to try and fit it, will post results.

Initial thought is that it is around 1/4-1/2 inch wider than Evo frame can accomodate, so would need some grinding (if that is possible at all - will have to see).
