That's correct. Pop out the exhaust is not a lean sign. An exhaust leak will do that. Overly rich, perhaps. Inspect the area of the exhaust from where it exits the head down to the right pipe. Pull all the chrome covers off to inspect. They will crack there. I will refrain from showing my pic of what happens when you miss that.

if you follow the original instructions you should come to understand that the thunderjet system is designed to enhance the midrange performance, and the actual thunder jet picks up what was taken away from WOT in order to enhance midrange.
Keep firmly in mind that All Jets are cumulative at WOT and higher RPM
study and learn from this
