If your mechanical speedo drive is like my '98, there is a tiny brass set scew on the bottom of the drive. You will have to get on your back on the ground to see and loosen it. Bad things will happen if you don't.

. The worm gear in the drive may come out with the cable. Don't lose it.

Ask me how I know. Ken

I think you meant to say "You will have to sit in a chair and scoot it up next to the Handy Lift"...

But very good info, I learned that lesson also (long before the Handy Lift).

This thread got me to thinking, the original cable is in my `89 FLSTC, it has 0ver 140K on it, never been serviced.

Ordering a new one this week.

Not sure I understand what you're saying here. If I service the old cable or replace it with a new one I have to loosen the tiny brass set screw or bad things will happen? Like what?

Ken, never mind. I get what you're saying. It doesn't have that brass screw. Thanks

I had that problem on my 85 speedometer bouncing all around, I found the cable end did not go into the speedometer very far and had some rounding of the square end at the tip but went very far into the drive, I pulled the inside of the cable out and put some small washers under the brass retainer at the top of the cable so it would put more of cable into the speedometer lubed and reinstalled into sheath, no more crazy needle, the washers will probably eventually wear threw the cable maybe?? but its been a couple of years

Nice to know. I pulled the cable off and cleaned up the inner and outer housings. It appears to be the original. Then I lubed it with graphite powder. A strange thing happened and I misplaced the top retainer. I've been searching for that thing the last 3 or 4 days to no avail. I found a new cable on eBay for $15 and scooped it up. New ones come with the retainer so now I have to decide which one to use.
