Ok guys and gals I’m looking for some input please. Looks like my trans output shaft seal is leaking. Seems to be mainly while riding and not sitting as nothing on the ground. While riding it gets on my side stand and when I park it leaves a spot where the side stand rests on the ground. If it what I think it is, how much work is involved as it looks like the inner primary has to come off? I pretty sure it’s the trans as I use Red Line tranny fluid and it’s that red shade of fluid. Any special tools needed for this job? How much should it cost if done at a dealership or independent shop roughly? I’m pretty good with tools but I’m getting older and would be doing this from ground level and that’s hard on me lately it seems. Photos are from a mirror underneath my bike. It’s a 1998 Dyna Wide Glide. Thanks for any help or info!
The large 5th gear seal and quad seal, the mainshaft 5th gear seal (wedding band seal), shifter shaft seal.
As far as tools, deep socket for the sprocket/pulley nut, sockets for the compensator and clutch nut, Inner primary race puller and installer. Will need new pulley nut and retaining plate kit also.
First thing you must have is a service manual, no way around it.
You will need a 1-1/2" 6 point socket to remove the compensator nut (minimum 1/2" drive).
A 1-3/16" socket for the clutch hub retaining nut.
A locking bar to immobilize the sprockets on the compensator and clutch shell.
A 1-7/8" special socket for the transmission sprocket nut (a store bought deep socket is too short, you will need to buy the special tool or fabricate your own).
When you remove the inner primary cover, replace all seals on the primary cover and also on the left side of the transmission.
Replace the sprocket spacer and the quad seal underneath also.
Thanks for the info so far! Yes I do have a HD service manual but it can be confusing sometimes as this will be my first time going into the primary. One question I have is does anyone know why this bolt going through the inner primary is touching the trans pan?
Need a better photo, but looks like you are just leaking from the eccentric screw.
If so, that an easy fix, since they are first sealed, but since they get adjusted over time, and new sealant not reapplied, it will start to leak.
Just remove the trans cover bolts, pull the trans cover so you can see the shifter linkage, back the jam nut off so you can thread the eccentric screw out one turn, hit it with some brake cleaner, 242 loctite, screw the indexer back in the one turn, get the pawls center on the drum pins so you have equal spacing both side, tighten the jam nut back down, then reinstall the trans cover.
As for what you have circled that is the breather out of the trans, but someone has broken out the other part of the 90 and is missing the hose as well.
Note that I have turned the top loop of the hose backwards so you can see it, but it just flips around so the loop is to the rear.
Also, if you look down from the breather fitting off the top of tran cover and to the left, will see the silver jam nut of the eccentric screws as well.
Since you need to pull the trans cover to change the breather fitting (use teflon dope or tape) and install the vent hose, may as well check the pawls to make sure that are centered and not leaking at the screw, which only take a min to do such at the same time.
Without some light on the subject it is impossible to tell what we are looking at, but one thing for sure, it is not the breather fitting or the shift pawl adjuster, unless the camera has x ray...
