Wasn't sure if this belonged in Audio or Evo...here we are.
I put a non-water proof radio in my pre-96 electraglide. Now I have a few trips coming up (Michigan to FL then one to TN) and I would like to have have some water protection for the face plate. I tried this...
...without success. I couldn't stretch the rubber surround far enough although it would be perfect if it would have worked, albeit not something easily reinstalled.
So I am here, hat in hand, hoping someone has solved this problem or has an idea that might work.
So far I have though about taking scoche cover I have and using some type of polymer or 2 part epoxy to build up the thickness of the mounting ring so that I can grind down the outside mounting surface, effectively making the part that I am trying to press into place smaller so that it fits. But I would need some recommendations on a liquid polymer that will chemically bind to the existing plastic and be very strong.
Also considered some type of "press seal" type of material that would form a decent seal to theouter edge of the existing rubber. Problem is that this method would have to be reusable (think velcro but without the air gaps) and I don't know if anything like this exists.
Would love to hear some suggestions on how to make one of my ideas work, or a completely new idea if you guys have any. outside edge to edge is approx. 8-1/8"
When you're moving, rain won't be a problem. You only have to be concerned with it when parked. You can either: Not worry about it at all, there probably won't be enough rain getting to it to bother it. That rubbery surround piece will deflect most of it anyway. Or, get some wide masking tape and put it over the rubber piece, making a ledge for water to run off of and use that when parked and expecting rain.
I like the tape idea. Wouldnt be hard to keep a roll in the saddle bag in a pinch.
The radio itself has that heavy plastic cover over the body behind the fairing and I siliconed the **** out of the spot where the rubber outer meets the fairing. So I am only concerned with heavy rain /road mist hurting the electronics in the face.
I ordered some molding putty and liquid acrylic. Hoping I can make my own cover that I can leqve in place and forget about it.
I got this 3d printer. All of a sudden, the whole world looks like a problem that needs printing. Need a rim protector to change a tire? Print it. Fender spacer? Print it. Steak knife handle? Print it. You could print a cover to fit inside that lip easy enough. Or, I SUPPOSE, you could cut it out of a piece of plastic and fit it in there when you park and expect rain.
