My solenoid went bad, and changing out contacts and plunger didn't fix the issue. That's why you should keep any eye on that, because you don't want to fix the symptom and still have the problem. Good luck.
thanks. I’m beginning to think it’s the starter. It was giving me more problems today.

I would go back and check that you have a good strong battery, clean connections, pos and neg. After that, the next thing of suspect would be your starter relay. They can start going bad and give you headaches. I hate electrical complications. Some people can understand the theory and diagnose the problem. Most of us just start replacing stuff and hope that it works. Until you figure out the true problem, make sure you can get to that negative terminal quickly to disconnect. I've done that dance around the bike trying to do that. LOL...

would a starter relay work intermittently? Also would they go bad right away? I just put a new one on a couple of weeks ago. I went back and checked all my connections, checked the battery and I can get it to start but more often than not it whurrs than starts. I’m so frustrated with this! Thank god my sportster runs good!!

I'm just curious, were you having problems with the old starter before you put the All ***** starter on? Trying to figure out if you just got a bad new starter or something else is going on

Yes, having starter problems so I got a new one. At least I thought it was a starter problem. Now I’m thinking it may not have been. They’re old cables, don’t know if original or not, but not new.

What exactly was happening before you replaced the starter?

grinding noise when trying to start. Sounded horrible. Checked the ring gear and it looked good so talked to a guy at the shop locally and he said it sounded like the starter drive. I figured it could be since it’s quite old, but now I’m realizing that might not have been what was going on. It’s got to be something else, just can figure it out. It’s like there’s just not enough oomph there to start it.

While I agree that it sounds like a starter problem I've had the same problem caused by a crap ignition.
Specifically an S&S Hi-4N ignition set to multi spark.
Eventually it did lunch my starter.

When a starter relay fails you will get nothing to the starter.
How old is your battery?
You already stated that your cables are old, you might consider replacing them as they can corrode on the inside which will impede the amount of voltage they carry.
